The Rose Code author returns with an astonishing World War II narrative about an unassuming bookworm who becomes history's deadliest female shooter. This film is based on a genuine story.

Mila Pavlichenko, a witty and bookish history student in the snowbound city of Kiev (now known as Kyiv), organizes her life around her library job and her small son—but Hitler's invasion of Ukraine and Russia sends her on a different road. Mila must transform from studious girl to deadly sniper—a lethal hunter of Nazis known as Lady Death—after being given a firearm and sent to join the fight. Mila is dragged from the horrific trenches of the eastern front and taken to America on a goodwill tour when word of her 300th kill makes her a national star.

Mila is isolated and lonely in the glittering world of Washington, DC, still suffering from war wounds and saddened by loss—until an unexpected friendship with First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and an even more unexpected bond with a mute fellow shooter offer the chance of happiness. Lady Death finds herself fighting her demons and enemy bullets in the fiercest duel of her life when an old opponent from Mila's past joins forces with a terrible new foe lurking in the shadows.

The Diamond Eye, based on a true story, is a haunting novel of desperation-born heroism, of a mother who became a soldier, of a woman who found her place in the world and forever changed the course of history.

About the Author

Kate Quinn

I keep track of and rank my current reading on Goodreads. Most of my books have a four-star rating, indicating that I thoroughly loved them and would enthusiastically recommend them. Five stars mean "blew my socks off" and are designated for exceptional reading. "I enjoyed it, yet something fell short," says a three-star reviewer. I rarely give lower ratings because I DNF books that I don't love and don't scorebooks that I don't finish.

Kate Quinn is a bestselling historical fiction novelist who has been featured in the New York Times and USA Today. She received her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Classical Voice from Boston University, where she was born and raised. Before turning to the twentieth century with "The Alice Network," "The Huntress," "The Rose Code," and "The Diamond Eye," she wrote four novels in the Empress of Rome Saga and two books in the Italian Renaissance. All of them have been translated into a variety of languages. Kate and her husband currently have three rescue dogs and live in San Diego.
