The Magnolia Palace by Fiona Davis

Fiona Davis, the New York Times bestselling author of The Lions of Fifth Avenue, returns with a suspenseful thriller about the secrets, treachery, and murder that take place within one of New York City's most opulent Gilded Age houses.

Lillian Carter's life has entirely fallen apart eight months after she lost her mother in the Spanish flu outbreak of 1919. For the past six years, Lillian has been one of the most sought-after artist's models in New York City, with statues based on her figure adorning sites from the Plaza Hotel to the Brooklyn Bridge. But now that her mother is gone, a bereft Lillian is lost and desperate—work has dried up, and an impending scandal has left her with nowhere to go. So when Lillian comes upon an opening at the Frick mansion—a structure that, strangely, bears her own face—she jumps at the chance. But the longer she works as a private secretary to Helen Frick, the imperious and demanding daughter and heiress of industrialist and art patron Henry Clay Frick, the more her life becomes entangled with the family's, drawing her into a tangled web of romantic trysts, stolen jewels, and family drama so intense that the stakes could be life or death.

Within the walls of the former Frick estate, now converted into one of New York City's most stunning museums, mod English model Veronica Weber has her chance to build her career—and with it, earn the money she needs to support her family back home—nearly fifty years later. When she and a charming intern/aspiring art curator named Joshua are fired from a Vogue shoot at the Frick Collection, she discovers a series of hidden messages in the museum, messages that will lead her and Joshua on a hunt that will not only solve Veronica's financial problems but also reveal the truth behind a decades-old murder in the infamous Frick family.

Reviews: The Magnolia Palace

"Fiona Davis has an uncanny ability to weave engaging stories out of some of New York's most sparkling historical moments... "The Magnolia Palace relates the narrative of two ladies whose lives are changed when they visit the Frick home, allowing readers to immerse themselves in two eras of history while experiencing tremendous love, epic tragedy, brilliant fortunes, and foul play."  —Town & Country

"In a story that will delight lovers of Anna Pitoniak and Karen Harper, Davis embellishes the real lives of the Frick family and Audrey Munson, a sculptor's muse. Another model, visiting the Frick Collection decades later, similarly leaps between the Roaring Twenties and the Swinging Sixties with ease. Davis' insider perspective on the illustrious Frick family gives individuals who kept the family afloat similar weight. " —Booklist

"Another New York landmark is illuminated by Davis's deftly combining two fascinating storylines. With well-developed characters, details, art history, and mystery, this is historical fiction at its best. " —Library Journal (STARRED REVIEW)

"Davis deftly blends reality and imagination, and her descriptions of the family's art collection are stunning. This is Davis's best work to date, with its overlapping narratives and detailed descriptions of the historic mansion. " —Publishers Weekly (STARRED REVIEW)

"In a beautiful blend of emotion and adventure, best-selling author Fiona Davis expands on the secrets of the Frick Collection... Davis understands how to craft a story and transition between timelines... The Magnolia Palace is a compelling novel with finely developed characters that pay special attention to individuals who may go unnoticed: the deaf private secretary, the museum intern, and the organ musician. We learn about their private lives and public outings, which disclose the daily messes of human life, the building of the ego, and the facts we try so hard to conceal. " —BookPage

"Davis delivers yet another superb historical thriller, this one set in a New York City house during the Gilded Age. You'll adore Lillian, the penniless young artist's model who survived the Spanish Flu in 1919, and Veronica, the young mod model of the 1960s, as well as Davis's brilliantly written and wonderfully intertwined female storytelling. " —Tara Moss, #1 internationally bestselling author of The War Widow

"No one does a better job of bringing New York City to life than Fiona Davis. Davis focuses her superb storytelling on the Frick mansion in The Magnolia Palace, focusing on the powerful women who made the Frick a New York icon—some on canvas, others descendants of the famed family. It's excellent historical fiction, defined by the complexities of female friendship, the glamour of the art world, and the courage to reinvent oneself. " —Karin Tanabe, author of The Gilded Years

"Fiona Davis's brilliance is in the care with which she creates her settings, allowing them to blossom into individuals in their own right. We became acquainted with them. We've grown to adore them. They also assist us in comprehending our historical context. The Magnolia Palace is both an ode to art and a homage to history. An engrossing and lovely read. " —Sarah Addison Allen, New York Times bestselling author

"Fiona Davis transports her readers into a mystery history lurking beneath the surface of our present world once again, employing her characteristic brilliance. In The Magnolia Palace, two very different women from two different times enter the Gilded Age world of famous industrialist and art collector Henry Clay Frick and his imperious daughter Helen and become entangled in a gripping mystery focused on the Frick estate that spans decades. Readers will never see a historic structure in the same light again. " —Marie Benedict, New York Times bestselling author of The Mystery of Mrs. Christie

"Every new Fiona Davis novel excites me, and The Magnolia Palace has it all—two compelling characters, two fantastic historical periods to immerse yourself in, and a delectable mystery that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I enjoyed every second of it! " —Martha Hall Kelly, New York Times bestselling author of Lilac Girls and Sunflower Sisters

"Rich in familial drama, complex romance, enigmatic clues, and long-buried secrets, Fiona Davis's dedicated and new readers alike will appreciate The Magnolia Palace." A must-see for everyone who has wandered through an art museum and been enticed to peer behind one or two paintings. " —Sarah Penner, New York Times bestselling author of The Lost Apothecary

"In this interesting, high-stakes novel about a renowned New York City landmark, the Frick Mansion, and two women whose tales collide within it fifty years apart, Fiona Davis is at the top of her game." "The Magnolia Palace is a fast-paced, engrossing treat that combines a family saga and a historical thriller. " —Christina Baker Kline, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Orphan Train and The Exiles

"Fiona Davis conjures up an intriguing story that unfolds like a brilliant game of Clue, combining a mansion turned museum, a stolen diamond, a mystery, and the lives of two young ladies separated by half a century. Suspicions abound, and a historic New York City landmark is on the verge of revealing a page-turning tale of money, family tensions, and long-held secrets. " —Lisa Wingate, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Before We Were Yours
