The Last House on the Street by Diane Chamberlain

In New York Times bestselling author Diane Chamberlain's The Last House on the Street, the crimes of a community come to light as two women, separated by a generation, are brought together by tragedy and a decades-old mystery.

1965
Ellie Hockley was raised in the well-to-do community of Round Hill, North Carolina, to be a certain type of traditional Southern lady. Ellie is a college student who is almost engaged to a bank manager, but she isn't as committed to her future as her family believes. She's decided to spend her summer vacation helping to register black voters as a volunteer. Ellie's parents are scandalized by her efforts, and her neighbors reveal their prejudices as she fights for the civil rights of the underprivileged. Ellie discovers the terrible true nature of the people who live in Round Hill after she loses her heart to a fellow volunteer.

2010
In Round Hill's new Shadow Ridge Estates subdivision, architect Kayla Carter and her husband designed a stunning home for themselves. It was supposed to be a place where they could raise their three-year-old daughter and spend the rest of their lives together. Instead, it's the site of Kayla's husband's death in a car accident, which a strange woman knows and cautions Kayla against moving in. The woods and lake behind the property are said to be haunted, and vandals have left threatening letters at the new house. Ellie Hockley, Kayla's next-door neighbor, is hiding long-buried mysteries concerning the land where her house was built.

Two females There are two tales here. In Diane Chamberlain's gripping, dramatic novel about the fight for justice, they're both on a collision course with the truth—no matter what that truth may reveal.

About the authors: Diane Chamberlain

Diane Chamberlain
Diane Chamberlain is the best-selling author of 27 novels in the New York Times, USA Today, and The Sunday Times of London. Diane learned the emotional impact of narrative as the daughter of a school principal who gave her a new book virtually every day. Even though she wrote several short "books" as a youngster, she didn't begin writing fiction until she was in her early thirties, while waiting for a delayed doctor's appointment with nothing but a pad, a pen, and an idea. She was immediately smitten.

Diane was born and raised in Plainfield, New Jersey, and has resided in San Diego and Northern Virginia for many years. San Diego State University awarded her a master's degree in clinical social work. She worked as a hospital social worker in San Diego and Washington, D.C., as well as a psychotherapist in private practice in Alexandria, Virginia, where she mostly worked with teenagers.

Diane was afflicted with rheumatoid arthritis more than two decades ago, and it impacted the way she worked: she produced two novels using speech recognition software before new medication permitted her to resume typing. She considers herself fortunate that her arthritis isn't worsening and that she is still able to participate in daily activities while also keeping up with a hectic travel schedule.

Diane resides in North Carolina with her photographer boyfriend, John Pagliuca, and their eccentric but adoring Shetland sheepdog, Cole.

Reviews: The Last House on the Street

"With this affecting and spellbinding portrayal of a community's buried secrets, Chamberlain (Big Lies in a Small Town) delivers the goods. After her husband, Jackson, died in a terrible accident while building the house in 2010, North Carolina architect Kayla Carter unwillingly prepared to move into her dream home with her three-year-old daughter, Rainie. Kayla is approached at her office by Ann Smith, who purports to be a possible customer but unnerves Kayla by discussing Jackson's death and telling her she is considering murdering someone. Kayla and Rainie meet Ellie Hockley, a new neighbor who has recently returned to the region to care for her aging mother and sick brother. In a parallel story set in 1965, Ellie joins a student group to help register black voters. She is threatened by the KKK while working with other students from Northern colleges and members of her local Black community in North Carolina, which is exacerbated by her attraction to a Black civil rights leader. Kayla discovers a sequence of tragic occurrences that occurred in the woods surrounding Kayla's land after learning Ellie was formerly in a romantic relationship with Kayla's father. The ever-present mystery of what Ann is up to heightens the drama, and the parallel plots blend wonderfully before an explosive conclusion. This will hold readers' attention. "  ―Publisher's Weekly (Starred Review)

"A scathing condemnation of bigotry and the power of humanity, as well as a page-turning thriller, this is a tremendous novel of our time. It's a novel with a lot of impacts. "Fierce and powerful. "  ―Cathy Kelly, bestselling author of OTHER WOMEN

"Diane Chamberlain deftly weaves together two stories separated by time to create a tense, suspenseful tale of two women confronting the terrible truths of the region they both call home. The novel's concentration on the struggles of a group of college students in the South during the Civil Rights movement is both intriguing and vital, and it will undoubtedly become a favorite among reading clubs nationwide. "  ―Chandler Baker, New York Times bestselling author of THE WHISPER NETWORK

"Because it is told sensitively and unflinchingly, this novel will make you cry, seethe, swoon, and rage.I've enjoyed all of Diane Chamberlain's books, but The Last House on the Street is without a doubt her best. "  ―Sally Hepworth, New York Times bestselling author of THE GOOD SISTER

"With this moving and fascinating tale of a community's buried secrets, Chamberlain delivers the goods."  ―Kirkus

"No one does it better than Diane Chamberlain when it comes to homey dramas with a dash of suspense."  ― Marie Claire
