Olga Dies Dreaming ⁽ᴴᵃʳᵈᶜᵒᵛᵉʳ ᴮᴼᴼᴷ⁾ by Xóchitl González

Olga Dies Dreaming

Time, HipLatina, Parade, The Rumpus, Angela Lashbrook, Vogue.com, Goodreads, Boston Globe, Philadelphia Inquirer, Bustle, Kirkus, Book Riot, Popsugar, Barnes & Noble, The Stacks, Russh, Boston Globe, and more have named it the MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK OF 2022!

With the story of a status-driven wedding planner grappling with her social goals, absent mother, and Puerto Rican roots in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, a brilliant new talent makes her debut.

Olga and her brother, Pedro "Prieto" Acevedo, are well-known in their hometown of New York in 2017. Olga is a tony wedding planner for Manhattan's power brokers, while Prieto is a popular congressman representing their gentrifying Latinx neighborhood in Brooklyn.

Despite their seductive public personas, things are significantly less rosy behind closed doors. Olga can plan the 1 percent's love lives, but she can't seem to find her own... until she meets Matteo, who challenges her to confront the consequences of long-held family secrets.

Blanca, Olga, and Prieto's mother, a radicalized Young Lord, abandoned her children to further a militant political cause, leaving them to be raised by their grandmother. Blanca has returned to their lives as a result of the storm season's winds.

Xochitl Gonzalez's Olga Dies Dreaming is a narrative set in New York City in the months leading up to the most devastating hurricane in Puerto Rico's history. It probes governmental corruption, familial discord, and the very notion of the American dream, all while asking what it means to survive a storm.

About the authors: Xóchitl González

Xóchitl González
I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, by my maternal grandparents in South Brooklyn. I am a proud alumni of the New York City public school system, where I studied performing arts at Edward R. Murrow High School before graduating from Brown University in 1999 with a B.A. in Fine Art and Art History. On the eve of my 40th birthday, some twenty years later, I decided to give in to my long-held goal of writing. I attended the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference before being admitted to the Iowa Writers' Workshop, where I was an Iowa Arts Fellow and the Michener-Copernicus Prize for Fiction winner. At the early age of 43, I completed my MFA in May of 2021. Before writing, I worked as an entrepreneur, consultant, wedding planner, fund-raiser, tarot reader, and etiquette columnist. My dog, Hectah Lavoe, and I are currently residing in Brooklyn.

Reviews: Olga Dies Dreaming

"Olga Dies Dreaming is a love letter to Brooklyn, full of the best music, dreams, and pains from real life. Gonzalez writes a thrilling novel about community, family, treachery, and the difficult inheritance of diaspora that is both amusing and devastating, a wild and ambitious narrative that once again demonstrates how the personal is always highly political. "An extraordinary story about the search for and defense of a home."  ― Jennine Capó Crucet, author of My Time Among The Whites

"Olga Dies Dreaming is as humorous as it is thought-provoking, as skillful as it is unique." In this remarkable debut, Xochitl Gonzalez demonstrates a flair for portraying the silliness in the fabric of life. Wit and wisdom rarely come together in such a potent duo. "  ― Mat Johnson, author of Pym and Loving Day

"Olga Dies Dreaming is the story of a damaged family torn apart by secrets, grief, and abandonment, and of those who refuse to be broken." Gonzalez's Olga is smart, humorous, and determined. She hustles, stumbles, falls, and eventually finds her way. Olga Dies Dreaming is a dramatic, scathing debut that examines capitalism, corruption, gentrification, colonialism, and their impact on underprivileged people."  ― Jaquira Díaz, author of Ordinary Girls

"Gonzalez delves deep into the broken heart of a family in this dazzling debut, deftly deconstructing the tangles of conditional love, identity, loyalty, secrets, and the very notion of home. This book is a complete joy to read since she manages to cover so much material with wisdom, sensitivity, and plentiful humor, and I will think about its wonderfully developed, really human characters for a long time. "  ― Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney, author of The Nest and Good Company

"Olga Dies Dreaming's brilliance lies in how a seemingly simple story of a woman seeking love, happiness, and fulfillment in a large city gradually exposes itself to be something very different. It's a novel about a New York that isn't generally recognized, the one that belongs to immigrant communities; it's a book about money, class, and political power; and it's a book about one brilliantly conceived family and the American Dream itself. "  ― Rumaan Alam, author of Leave the World Behind

"Hilarious... A huge dramedy about love, politics, blackmail, and real estate set in Brooklyn, starring a Puerto Rican family. "  ― People

"Olga Dies Dreaming is vibrant and honest, with a roller coaster of lovely highs and lows. Overall, it's an unforgettable experience. "  ― BookPage

"Gonzalez delves into heavy issues such as compulsion, rape, gentrification, and colonial exploitation in her ambitious debut novel...The redeeming aspect of love, in all of its manifestations: romantic, brotherly, paternal, patriotic, and, finally, self-love, shines through. "  ― Booklist

"With her buzzy debut, Olga Dies Dreaming, Xochitl Gonzalez delivers a healthy dosage of brutal love. "  ― TIME

"Olga Dies Dreaming deftly portrays its flawed people grappling with cultural identity, familial secrets, bereavement, and self-preservation. Their experiences show how we can define ourselves based on how others see us, which can lead to tragic outcomes. "  ― Book of the Month

"An enlightening debut... Gonzalez enriches this family drama by providing a wealth of knowledge about the characters' diaspora and politics. "  ― Publishers Weekly

"A tremendously absorbing story...Rarely does a novel, particularly a debut novel, grapple with such a huge web of personal, cultural, political, and even international imperatives in such a forceful and delightful way. "  ―The Washington Post

"Olga Dies Dreaming is a lovely force, entirely distinct in its complexity but universal in its characters' longing to be loved and understood."  ― Associated Press
