How High We Go in the Dark by Sequoia Nagamatsu

A spellbinding and profoundly prescient debut for fans of Cloud Atlas and Station Eleven, a daring and deeply heartfelt work of mind-bending imagination from a singular new voice that follows a cast of intricately linked characters over hundreds of years as humanity struggles to rebuild itself in the aftermath of a climate plague.

In the year 2030, a bereaved archeologist travels to the Arctic Circle to carry on the work of his recently deceased daughter at the Batagaika Crater, where researchers are studying long-buried secrets now revealed in melting permafrost, including the perfectly preserved remains of a girl who appears to have died of an ancient virus.

The Arctic disease, if released, would transform life on Earth for future generations, quickly spreading over the planet and pushing humanity to find a variety of moving and imaginative methods to embrace possibility in the face of tragedy. A cynical employee at a theme park for terminally ill children falls in love with a mother determined to keep her afflicted kid. When one of his research subjects, a pig, gains the capacity for human speech, a heartbroken scientist seeking a cure gets a second chance at parenting. A widowed painter and her adolescent granddaughter set out on a cosmic journey to find a new homeworld.

In Sequoia Nagamatsu takes readers on a wildly creative and compassionate trip that spans countries, decades, and even celestial bodies to convey a story about the human spirit's resiliency, our endless capacity to dream, and the interwoven threads that bind us all together in the universe.

"Epic... Sequoia Nagamatsu is a writer whose imagination is only surpassed by his compassion, the type we need to see us through the night." — Chloe Benjamin, New York Times bestselling author of The Immortalists

Reviews: How High We Go in the Dark

"Sequoia Nagamatsu lets his story unfold with such a remarkable feeling of scale, freedom, and clarity, creating a stunning mosaic of experience and humanness. " -- Aimee Bender, New York Times bestselling author of The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake

"How High We Go in the Dark isn't a plague novel; it's a post-plague novel," says the author. Sequoia Nagamatsu deftly navigates time, space, and species while grappling with the question, "Where do we go from here?" My favorite type of speculative fiction is philosophical and hopeful, endlessly innovative, and full of life. " -- Gabrielle Zevin, New York Times bestselling author of The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry

"In a story that has drawn similarities to Cloud Atlas and Station Eleven, Nagasatsu combines literary and imaginative vigor. " -- Library Journal (Spotlight)

"Outstanding...Nagamatsu brilliantly weaves more philosophical dystopian stories into the novel's bigger climate and pandemic fiction plot lines, stacking his storylines and imparting a sheen of surreality to even the most science-heavy sections, reminiscent of George Saunders' early 2000s short story work. The outcome is an intriguing mix of literary and science fiction, with rich, somber language assisting the inventive strokes. This work exemplifies the best of short fiction, painting memorable characters and situations with the economy, but Nagamatsu excels in the long-form as well, cleverly integrating his pieces into a pleasing whole. Even if there is no disputing the bleakness at the conclusion, Nagamatsu deftly avoids nihilism, finding beauty and meaning in the darkness, even at the end of the world. essential. " -- Library Journal (starred review)

"Both grand and intimate, Nagamatsu's debut novel is the pinnacle of science fiction, presented in magnificent, evocative prose, and offers hope in the face of the tragedy via the human connection. " -- Booklist (starred review)

"A fascinating and devastating meditation on life, death, and what it is to be human." These pieces, which span eons and worlds, have the power of short narratives while still building on the broader book. Many writers attempt the novel-in-stories structure; Nagamatsu belongs among the great. Aside from the sheer pleasure of reading a well-crafted text, this work also explores major ideas through smaller, intimate stories. This format lets us become involved in the minutiae of characters' daily lives, particular challenges, and personal pain, allowing us to absorb, rather than be alienated by the bigger total. It's a book that's as full of hope, humanity, and opportunity as the anguish and loss of a climatic crisis or epidemic laid naked. " -- The Brooklyn Rail

"This hauntingly beautiful novel is about the human spirit's ability to persevere in the face of adversity. It's a lyrical odyssey that seems fanciful yet familiar, with everything from a cosmic search for a home to a theme park for terminally ill children to a talking pig. " -- Good Housekeeping, The 15 Best and Most-Anticipated Books of 2022

"How High We Go in the Dark by Sequoia Nagamatsu is a huge, epic debut that travels from the Arctic to interstellar space, from life to what might come after it. Nagamatsu imagines the effects—both cultural and planetary—of a mysterious, terrible virus with accuracy and horrifying foresight, but he also investigates the extraordinary devotion, tenacity, and capacity for resilience that permit life—human and otherwise—to seek for survival. Sequoia Nagamatsu is a writer whose imagination is only surpassed by his compassion, the type we all need to see us through the dark. " -- Chloe Benjamin, New York Times bestselling author of The Immortalists

"How High We Go in the Dark is amazing not only because of the incredible feats of imagination, which make me dizzy just thinking about them but also because of the humanity and tenderness with which Sequoia Nagamatsu guides us through this landscape, helping us survive while holding on to the things that make us human. This is an incredible book, one that we should hold close as we contemplate the uncertain future. " -- Kevin Wilson, New York Times bestselling author of Nothing to See Here

"How High We Go in the Dark" is a haunting and luminous science fiction film that orchestrates a plethora of distinctive voices into a beautiful and lucid science fiction that resembles a hazy future memory of our present. This is an outstanding debut. " -- Alan Moore, creator of Watchmen and V for Vendetta
