As award-winning author Donna Everhart immerses readers in a unique setting—a turpentine camp buried deep in the vast pine forests of Georgia during the Great Depression—for a captivating story of friendship, survival, and three vagabonds' intersecting lives—Where the Crawdads Sing meets The Four Winds...

During the Great Depression, poor people were forced to live in and work in remote labor camps scattered across the vast pine forests of the American South. They are completely dependent on selfish camp owners who supply food and housing at exorbitant prices as they gather the pine gum that will be processed into turpentine, creating an ongoing cycle of work and debt. These camps, however, are sometimes the last and only alternative for the most destitute among America's enormous unemployed.

This is true for three people whose paths crossed in the deep forests of Georgia in 1932 at the Swallow Hill turpentine camp. Swallow Hill provides distance and obscurity for Rae Lynn Cobb, a young lady dressed as a man, from those who want to wrongfully arrest her for killing her kind but the reckless husband. It's a place where a charming bachelor called Del Reese might be able to forget about a recent trauma that has rattled him to his core.

Swallow Hill, on the other hand, is not a simple refuge. Crow, a nasty leader, and Otis Riddle, a selfish commissary owner who takes out his frustrations on his wife, Cornelia, govern the dismal camp. Under the ever-watchful, narrow-minded Crow, Del and "Ray Cobb" battle to survive tough, terrible conditions. Rae Lynn begins to see a way out of the camp as she develops deeper friendships with both Del and Cornelia. But before she can open herself to a new life and grab the opportunity to start again, she must come to terms with her past, with all its anguish and beauty.
