REESE'S BOOK CLUB'S JANUARY SELECTION!

In this gripping and absorbing novel, bestselling author Thrity Umrigar chronicles the stories of two couples and the sometimes perilous and tragic struggles of love across a cultural difference.

Smita, an Indian-American journalist, has returned to India to cover a story, albeit reluctantly: she and her family left India many years ago with no intention of ever returning. As Smita investigates the case of Meena, a Hindu lady who was attacked by members of her village and family for marrying a Muslim man, she encounters a society where tradition trumps one's own heart, as well as a story that threatens to reveal painful secrets from Smita's past. Smita tries everything she can to balance the scales as Meena's fate hangs in the balance. She's also becoming attracted to Mohan, an Indian man she encounters while on assignment. But Honor's multiple love tales are as disparate as Meena and Smita's cultures: Smita understands she has the option to engage in a casual relationship, knowing she can determine later how important it is to her.

In this beautiful and evocative tale about love, hope, familial commitment, betrayal, and sacrifice, Thrity Umrigar depicts two heroic women navigating how to remain true to their homelands and themselves at the same time.

If Today Be Sweet was chosen by the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle, while her other novels were chosen by Community Reads. The Cleveland Arts Prize, a Lambda Literary Award, and the Seth Rosenberg Prize have all been awarded to Thrity.

Thrity was born in Bombay, India, and moved to the United States at the age of 21. She had the kind of schizophrenic and cosmopolitan childhood that has served her well in her life as a writer as a Parsi youngster attending a Catholic school in a mostly Hindu country. She grew up lost in the fantastic worlds created by Steinbeck, Hemingway, Woolf, and Faulkner, despite being accused of being a daydreaming, head-in-the-clouds youngster by both instructors and parents. She'd be able to escape from these novels long enough to develop her own fictitious and lyrical universes. They survived business school by starting a theatrical club and writing, directing, and acting in plays, which she was encouraged to do by her practical-minded parents. At the age of fifteen, she had her first short stories, essays, and poetry published in national journals and newspapers in India.

After getting a master's degree in journalism from the University of the States, Thrity worked as an award-winning reporter, columnist, and magazine writer for several years. She has a Ph.D. in English as well. Thrity was awarded a one-year Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University in 1999, which is offered to journalists in their mid-career.

Thrity authored her first novel, Bombay Time, while at Harvard. She accepted a position as a professor at Case Western Reserve University in 2002. She also writes occasional freelance pieces for major newspapers and has contributed to the book sections of the New York Times, Washington Post, and Boston Globe.

Thrity has spoken at book festivals across the country, including the Los Angeles Festival of Books, the Tuscon Book Festival, and the Miami Book Fair International; universities, including MIT, Harvard University, and Spelman College; and literary societies, civic and business organizations, and public libraries. Reviews: Honor Thrity Umrigar

"In the same way that A Thousand Splendid Suns told the story of Afghanistan's women, Thrity Umrigar tells the story of India with the intimacy of someone who knows the many facets of a land awash in contradictions, permeated by a smoldering mix of ageless traditions and new ideas, beauty and brutality, hope and despair, certainty and mystery, Thrity Umrigar tells the story of India with the intimacy of someone who knows the many facets of A place where falling in love might sometimes mean bucking convention... and risking everything for what matters most. " —Lisa Wingate, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Before We Were Yours

"Thrity Umrigar continues her practice of exposing the silliness of our supposed differences with Honor. This is a gripping and enthralling story that alternates between dread and hope, betrayal and atonement. It's a story about the human heart in all of its intricacies, and it's about love worth fighting for. " —Connie Schultz, bestselling author of The Daughters of Erietown

"Umrigar shines at juxtaposing the differences between contemporary India's tech boom image and the deep religious conflicts that continue to wrack rural parts of the country... This is a fascinating portrayal of an India that "felt inexpressibly large—as well as narrow and provincial enough to choke." —Booklist

"Honor is a full-bodied and incisive portrayal of a horrible family drama as well as a reflection on the difficulties of love—both personal and national." —Shelf Awareness

"Attractive, Umrigar provides readers with a broad awareness of the complex issues at hand in contemporary India. " —Publishers Weekly

"Thrity Umrigar's story paints a complete picture of India... Umrigar succeeds at generating compelling settings and scenes, whether she's writing about the dazzling lights of Mumbai or the destitution of country life. The novel's thorough awareness of the numerous nuances of Indian civilization will be appreciated by readers. " —BookPage

"Individual sequences that distill these tensions are when Umrigar's ability as a writer shines brightest. Smaller moments build to a crescendo, just as the story's narrative does, both in the hastening action around Meena's brothers' trial and the reader's comprehension of Smita's history... The numerous layers that makeup Honor unfurl like a flower in full bloom. " —The Boston Globe

"Umrigar deftly handles honor killings in rural India, and Meena is given agency and complexity in her portrayal... Honor bravely examines a system that continues to sanction brutality and serves as a poignant reminder that "in every country, in every crisis, there are a handful of people who will stand against the tide." —Minneapolis Star Tribune

"Thrity Umrigar's Honor is about Smita, an Indian-American journalist who returns to India on assignment. The topic she's covering is an emotionally charged one that uses the lives of people to depict both new and old cultural realities in India. Smita's experiences reveal the complexities of journalism and make her question her limits as a reporter. These are the kinds of characters who stick with you long after you've turned the pages, complex and unvarnished. " An amazing journalist tells a powerful narrative about family, devotion, and cultural truths. " —Reese Witherspoon, the January 2022 Reese’s Book Club Pick

"Honor is a novel with a great deal of depth—cultural, emotional, romantic, and spiritual." It's also a story of incredible grace, both in terms of the understanding it imparts to its characters and in the ways, they traverse a harsh but beautiful life. " —Rebecca Makkai, Pulitzer Prize finalist for The Great Believers

"Honor is a gripping tale about two very different women whose paths cross after an atrocious act of brutality in India. Thrity Umrigar writes beautifully about the intricacies of hatred and love, estrangement and belonging, oppression, and privilege, clinging on and letting go, with insight and compassion. "This is a novel that will stay with you for a long time." —Cheryl Strayed, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Wild
