"A masterpiece"—after a methodical killer strikes on New Year's Eve, LAPD detective Renée Ballard must team up with Harry Bosch to hunt justice in a society devastated by fear and social turmoil (Publishers Weekly).

At the end of the New Year's Eve countdown, Hollywood is in disarray. As hundreds of revelers fire their weapons into the air, LAPD detective Renée Ballard works her graveyard shift, waiting for the annual shower of lead. Ballard is dispatched just after midnight to a scene where an industrious auto shop owner has been fatally shot in the middle of a crowded street party.

Ballard immediately deduces that the fatal bullet could not have fallen from the sky and that it is linked to another unsolved murder—a case that Detective Harry Bosch was once investigating. At the same time, Ballard is on the lookout for the Midnight Men, a heinous pair of serial rapists who have been terrifying women and leaving no trace.

Ballard, who is determined to solve both cases, feels as if she is always sprinting uphill in a police department that has been irreversibly transformed by the pandemic and recent societal instability. Ballard must go outside to the one investigator she can rely on: Harry Bosch because the department is plagued by inertia and low morale. However, while the two determined detectives work together to figure out where old and new cases collide, they must always keep an eye on their backs. The vicious predators they're after are willing to kill to keep their secrets hidden.

The Dark Hours illustrates that "relentless on their own, Ballard's and Bosch's combined skills could be combustible," as it unfolds with irrepressible force and nail-biting interest (Los Angeles Times).

About the authors: Michael Connelly

Michael Connelly
While at the University of Florida, Michael Connelly discovered Raymond Chandler's writings and decided to pursue a career as a writer. Once he'd decided on this path, he majored in journalism and minored in creative writing, a program in which author Harry Crews was one of his professors.

After graduating in 1980, Connelly worked for newspapers in Daytona Beach and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and specialized in the criminal beat. He wrote about police and crime in Fort Lauderdale during the height of the so-called cocaine wars' murder and violence surge that swept South Florida. In 1986, he spent months interviewing survivors of a major airline tragedy with two other reporters. They published a feature story for a magazine about the disaster and the survivors that were later nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for feature writing. As a result of the magazine story, Connelly rose through the ranks of journalism as a result, obtaining a job as a crime reporter for the Los Angeles Times, one of the country's leading newspapers, and bringing him to the city that his literary hero, Chandler, had written about.

After three years on the crime beat in Los Angeles, Connelly began writing his debut novel, featuring LAPD Detective Hieronymus Bosch. The novel, The Black Echo, was released in 1992 and earned the Edgar Award for Best First Novel from the Mystery Writers of America. It was based in part on a true incident that occurred in Los Angeles. Connelly went on to write almost 30 more books after that.

Connelly's works have sold over 80 million copies worldwide, and he has been translated into forty different languages. He has won the Edgar Award, Anthony Award, Macavity Award, Los Angeles Times Best Mystery/Thriller Award, Shamus Award, Dilys Award, Nero Award, Barry Award, Audie Award, Ridley Award, Maltese Falcon Award (Japan), 38 Caliber Award (France), Grand Prix Award (France), Premio Bancarella Award (Italy), Pepe Carvalho Award (Spain), and Pepe Carvalho Award

In 2003 and 2004, Michael served as President of the Mystery Writers of America. In addition to his literary work, Michael is one of the producers and writers of the Amazon Prime Video original series "Bosch."

Michael splits his time between Los Angeles and Tampa, Florida, with his family.

Reviews: The Dark Hours Michael Connelly

"Stellar… Nobody will be disappointed if they stick with Ballard and Bosch to the finish. The motto "the department always comes first" is put to the test. "The department is always victorious."Kirkus Reviews

"This is the best Renée Ballard and Harry Bosch novel yet... Ballard has grown into one of the most nuanced and fascinating characters in crime fiction."Bill Ott, Booklist (starred review)

"A masterwork... Connelly is meticulous about genuine police practice, and he engrosses the reader in the principles of detective work while giving plenty of suspense and action. "Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"Connelly's stories are as incisive as ever... they always manage to delve into another aspect of the city's spirit." Crimereads

“Extraordinary… [Connelly] is one of the finest in the field when it comes to writing about investigations and suspense, but the friendship between Ballard and Bosch—a professional friendship born of two bright minds dedicated to the same difficult but vital work—is the icing on the cake."Collette Bancroft, Tampa Bay Times

"Outstanding... Connelly is the best living crime fiction author on a constant basis. "The Dark Hours" only adds to that.Oline H. Cogdill, South Florida Sun Sentinel

One of the best thrillers of the month... Ballard and Bosch make an excellent team since they both operate in and around a police department that, in Ballard's opinion, is too frequently focused on "protecting and serving the image rather than the citizens."Richard Lipez, Washington Post
