People, the Associated Press, Time, Los Angeles Times, Parade, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, The Guardian, Publishers Weekly, and others have named it one of the most anticipated novels of the season.

The state of Terror, by #1 New York Times bestselling authors Hillary Clinton and Louise Penny, is a story of unrivaled thrills and unparalleled insider knowledge.

A new administration has just been inaugurated after a difficult era in American politics, and to everyone's amazement, the president has chosen a political foe for the crucial job of secretary of state.

Anahita Dahir, a young foreign service officer (FSO) on the State Department's Pakistan desk, receives a perplexing text from an unidentified source as the new president addresses Congress for the first time, with Secretary Adams in attendance. She discovers too late that the message was a hastily coded warning.

What appears to be a series of apparent terrorist attacks turns out to be the start of an international chess game involving the volatile and Byzantine politics of Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran; the race to develop nuclear weapons in the region; the Russian mob; a burgeoning rogue terrorist organization; and an American government on the back foot in international affairs.

As the scope of the threat becomes clear, Secretary Adams and her team realize that it has been carefully orchestrated to take advantage of four years of an American government out of touch with international affairs, out of practice with diplomacy, and out of power in the places where it matters most.

It will need the abilities of a unique team to fight such an elaborate, carefully organized conspiracy: a passionate young FSO; a dedicated journalist; and a brilliant, driven, but as yet untested new secretary of state.

Hillary Rodham Clinton, the 67th Secretary of State, and Louise Penny, a multiple award-winning #1 New York Times bestselling author, collaborated on State of Terror, a unique and completely riveting international thriller.

About the Author

Hillary Rodham Clinton

Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton (born October 26, 1947) was the 67th Secretary of State of the United States, serving in President Barack Obama's cabinet. Despite losing the election, she became the first woman in US history to earn a major party's presidential nomination, as well as the first woman to win the popular vote in a presidential contest.

From 2001 to 2009, she served as a Senator for the state of New York. Hillary Clinton served as First Lady from 1993 to 2001 as the wife of the 42nd President of the United States, William Jefferson Clinton. Clinton was a leading candidate for the Democratic presidential candidacy in 2008.

Hillary Rodham, an Illinois native, gained national notoriety in 1969 when she was chosen as the first student commencement speaker at Wellesley College by her classmates. She worked as Congressional legal counsel for a short time after graduating from Yale Law School in 1973. Rodham relocated to Arkansas in 1974 and married Bill Clinton the following year. In 1977, Hillary Rodham Clinton co-founded Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families, and in 1978, she became the Legal Services Corporation's first female chairperson. She was named the first female partner at Rose Law Firm in 1979 and was twice named one of America's top 100 lawyers. With her husband Bill as Governor of Arkansas from 1979 to 1981 and 1983 to 1992, Clinton successfully headed a task committee to modernize the state's education system. She has served on the boards of directors of several major firms, including Wal-Mart.

Her primary project, the Clinton health-care proposal, failed to receive passage from the US Congress in 1994 while she was First Lady of the United States. Clinton did, however, play a role in the establishment of the State Children's Health Insurance Program, the Adoption and Safe Families Act, and the Foster Care Independence Act in 1997 and 1999. The public's reaction to her tenure as First Lady was split. She is the first First Lady to have been called to appear before a federal grand jury in 1996 as part of the Whitewater investigation, but she was never charged with any wrongdoing in this or any of her husband's previous investigations. Following the Lewinsky incident in 1998, which led to the filing of Articles of Impeachment against her husband, Bill Clinton, the state of her marriage was the topic of much conjecture.

After relocating to the small suburban town of Chappaqua in Westchester County, Clinton was elected as a senator for the State of New York in January 2000. Clinton was the first American First Lady to run for public office in that election, and she was also the first female senator to represent New York. She initially supported the Bush administration on some foreign policy issues in the Senate, including voting for the Iraq War Resolution, but then came out against it on the war in Iraq and most domestic problems. Senator Clinton was re-elected in 2006 by a large majority. Hillary Clinton won more primaries and delegates than any other female contender in American history in the 2008 presidential election, but she lost to Senator Barack Obama by a razor-thin margin. Clinton became the first former First Lady to serve in a president's cabinet as Secretary of State.
