From the congressman who led the first impeachment of Donald J. Trump, a vital inside account of American democracy in its darkest hour, from the rise of authoritarianism unleashed by Trump to the January 6 insurgency, and a warning that those forces are as formidable as ever.

"Historians will be grateful for this profoundly personal and deeply knowledgeable guide to one of America's greatest problems if there is still an American democracy fifty years from now." We should be grateful that we have the opportunity to read it now." —Timothy Snyder, author of On Tyranny, the #1 New York Times bestselling novel

Congressman Adam Schiff has been warning about the revival of authoritarianism around the world and the threat it posed to the United States in the years leading up to Donald Trump's victory. However, as the investigation into Donald Trump's Russia and Ukraine-related presidential power abuses progressed, Schiff came to the awful conclusion that the greatest threat to American democracy now came from inside.

In Midnight in Washington, Schiff argues that Trump's administration has damaged our institutions and weakened the Republican Party to the point that the risk will continue for years, necessitating exceptional vigilance against authoritarianism's rising and dangerous appeal. The congressman traces his journey from serious prosecutor to congressman with expertise in national security and a reputation for bipartisanship, to the liberal lightning rod, the scourge of the right, and the archenemy of the president—from serious prosecutor to congressman with expertise in national security and a reputation for bipartisanship, to the liberal lightning rod, the scourge of the right, and the archenemy of the president. Schiff takes us behind the scenes of his impeachment team's desperate defense of the constitution in the face of the advent of a uniquely American form of dictatorship.

Schiff reveals the private struggles, internal conflicts, and courage triumphs that came with defending the republic against a lawless president—but also the slow surrender of people he had worked with and admired to the dangerous immorality of a president engaged in a historic betrayal of his office. One of the great dramas of our day, told by the man who became the president's main enemy, is Schiff's fight for democracy. It's a story that starts with Trump but doesn't end with him, following us through Trump's disastrous presidency and Schiff's account of January 6, 2021, and how the anti-democratic forces he unleashed are still defining his party, making the future of democracy in America more dubious than ever.

Reviews: Midnight in Washington

"A vital champion and defender of American democracy shows us how he became a national leader and, from his experiences on the inside, how near the Trump regime brought us to losing our system in this insightful, engrossing, and enlightening biography." Please take the time to read Adam Schiff's book and pay special attention to his warnings about the risks that still exist."—Michael Beschloss, author of Presidents of War: The Epic Story from 1807 to Today, a New York Times bestseller book

"With this absorbing and insightful new book, Adam Schiff has done a huge public service." Schiff has written a crucial first draft of history by putting us inside the impeachments of the 45th president—a history that is not distant or retrospective, but all too present, because the challenges to the republic he so eloquently outlines are still with us. This is required reading for anybody concerned about American democracy, the rule of law, or the nation's destiny."—Jon Meacham, author of American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House, won the Pulitzer Prize

"Adam Schiff has defeated Donald Trump permanently in these pages, despite failing to win his conviction in the first impeachment trial. Attempts to alter or rewrite this vital aspect of history will be met with this book as a touchstone of truth. Congressman Schiff has revived our trust in the noble nature of public service and demonstrated what a single determined patriot—courageous, bright, and fearless—can achieve even in a divided country. "—Ron Chernow, author of Washington: A Life and Alexander Hamilton, won the Pulitzer Prize

"When American democracy was on the verge of extinction, Adam Schiff acted as a capable guardian, saving our country from both foreign and domestic foes. In this gripping story, Schiff not only provides intriguing information, but he also provides a much-needed warning about the challenges that America faces from inside, as well as an essential how-to guide for protecting our country.”—Stacey Abrams, founder of Fair Fight Action
