Katy is left reeling after her mother passed away. Carol was not only Katy's mother but also her best friend and first caller. Throughout an Italian summer, Katy gets to know Carol, not as her mother, but as the young lady who came before her. She isn't quite who Katy had hoped she would be, and Katy will soon have to reconcile the mother who knew everything with the young woman who hasn't got a clue.
