Everything in the world casts a shadow. Even the world in which we live. And, like any shadow, there is a point at which it must come into contact. Where the shadow meets its source, there is a seam.

Olivia Prior grew up at Merilance School for Girls, and the only thing she has from her past is her mother's journal, which appears to be unraveling into madness. Then, Olivia receives a letter inviting her to return home—to Gallant. When Olivia comes, though, no one expects her. Olivia, on the other hand, isn't going to leave the first place that feels like home, no matter how hostile her cousin Matthew is or how many half-formed ghouls prowl the halls.

Olivia is convinced that Gallant is concealing something, and she is determined to find out what it is. When she crosses a destroyed wall at the right moment, Olivia finds herself in a gallant—but not gallant—place. The manor is decaying, the ghouls are solid, and an enigmatic figure reigns supreme. Olivia can now see what has divided her family for generations and where her father may have originated from.

Olivia has always wanted to be a part of something, but can she accept the position of Prior and safeguard our world from the Master of the House? Will she stand with him, or will she take his place?
