The epic story of Violeta Del Valle, a lady whose life spans one hundred years and bears witness to the twentieth century's greatest changes, is told in this sweeping novel from the New York Times bestselling author of A Long Petal of the Sea.

Violeta, the first girl in a family of five rowdy sons, was born on a rainy day in 1920. Her life is marked by exceptional occurrences from the start, as the effects of the Great War can still be felt, even as the Spanish flu lands on the shores of her South American birthplace almost at the same time as she is born.

The family will survive that crisis thanks to her father's foresight, only to face a new one when the Great Depression alters the refined city life she has known. Her family is forced to flee to a wild and beautiful but secluded section of the nation after losing everything. She will turn eighteen there, and her first admirer will approach her.

She recounts experiences of painful grief and passionate affairs, poverty and luxury, horrible loss, and tremendous delight in the form of a letter to someone she loves above all others. Some of history's most significant events have affected her life: the fight for women's rights, the rise and fall of tyrants, and, eventually, not one, but two pandemics.

Isabel Allende once again delivers us an epic that is both fiercely motivating and incredibly moving, told through the eyes of a woman whose remarkable passion, tenacity, and sense of humor carry her through a lifetime of turmoil.
