In this deeply personal collection of essays, the beloved New York Times best-selling author muses on home, family, friendships, and writing.

"Any story that begins will also come to an end." Ann Patchett is a writer who knows how her story will turn out. Life, on the other hand, frequently takes unexpected turns. In these thoughtful articles, Patchett ponders this fact, providing a fresh and intimate look into her mind and heart.

The title article, a surprise and moving meditation on an unexpected friendship, lies at the heart of These Precious Days, and it addresses "what it means to be seen, to find someone with whom you can be your best and most complete self." Patchett had no idea that choosing an early galley of actor and producer Tom Hanks' short story collection to read one night before bed would change her life. It would introduce her to a fascinating woman named Sooki, Tom's intelligent assistant, with whom she would create a deep bond that would have far-reaching ramifications for both of them.

Patchett, a literary alchemist, mines the depths of her experiences to produce gold: captivating and poignant self-portraits and landscapes, each brimming with emotion and insight. She converts the private into the universal by turning her writer's eye on her personal experiences, giving us all a new way to look at our worlds and reminding us how transient and enigmatic life can be.

Connecting life and art, Patchett connects life and art as she illuminates what matters most, from the enchantments of Kate DiCamillo's children's books (author of the upcoming The Beatryce Prophecy) to youthful memories of Paris; the cherished life gifts given by her three fathers to the unexpected influence of Charles Schultz's Snoopy; the expansive vision of Eudora Welty to the importance of knitting. The works in These Precious Days are infused with the author's grace, wit, and compassion, leaving an unforgettable stamp on the soul—and demonstrating why Ann Patchett is one of our time's most acclaimed writers.

About the Author

Ann Patchett

Patchett was born in the city of Los Angeles in the state of California. Jeanne Ray, a novelist, is her mother.

When she was six years old, she relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, where she still resides. Patchett said she adores her home in Nashville, where she lives with her husband, a doctor, and their dog. If you asked her where she would go, she would always say home. "The steady window that opens out into the imagination is home."

Patchett went to St. Bernard Academy, a Catholic school for girls run by the Sisters of Mercy that is private and non-parochial. She went on to Sarah Lawrence College after graduation, where she studied fiction writing with Allan Gurganus, Russell Banks, and Grace Paley. She went on to the University of Iowa's Iowa Writers' Workshop and the Provincetown, Massachusetts-based Fine Arts Work Center, where she met longtime friend Elizabeth McCracken. She also wrote her first novel, The Patron Saint of Liars, there.

She co-founded Parnassus Books with Karen Hayes in 2010 after realizing that her hometown of Nashville no longer had a good book store; the store launched in November 2011. Patchett was named to TIME magazine's Time 100 list of the world's most important people in 2012.
