THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Jenna's Pick for the TODAY Show Book Club

A New York Times Notable Book, as well as a Best Book of the Year selection by Oprah Quarterly and the Washington Post.

The bestselling author and master of engrossing, intelligent fiction returns with a new novel set in 1950s America.

Emmett Watson, then eighteen, is driven home to Nebraska by the warden of the juvenile work farm where he had just completed a fifteen-month sentence for involuntary homicide. Emmett plans to pick up his eight-year-old brother, Billy, and fly to California, where they can start their lives over, with his mother long gone, his father lately deceased, and the family farm foreclosed upon by the bank. However, after the warden drives away, Emmett discovers that two of his work farm pals have secreted themselves in the warden's car trunk. They've devised a whole different plan for Emmett's future, one that would lead them all on a perilous voyage in the opposite direction—to New York City.

Towles' third novel, which spans only 10 days and is recounted from several points of view, will delight admirers of his multi-layered literary style while also introducing them to a variety of new and brilliantly imagined locales, characters, and topics.

"Packed with drama, Towles' fans will be rewarded with many of the same pleasures they've come to expect from him: a plethora of stories told at a leisurely pace (the novel clocks in at 592 pages); numerous endearing and sometimes irritating characters; and pitch-perfect plotting with surprises at every turn." Towles has written another winner, one whose pages will be flipped — and occasionally tattered — by delighted readers. BookPage (starred)

The Lincoln Highway is a cross-country highway tale that embraces the mythos of an age... The touchstones on this trip will please readers. Star-Tribune

[The Lincoln Highway] retains all of the author's typical wit and style — an action-packed cross-country journey full of unexpected turns and unforgettable action. Town & Country

"[A] tense, heroic adventure..." Towles combines aspects of the picaresque, the coming-of-age story, and the epic adventure in this work in a sophisticated way.The unforgettable last sequence, which I didn't see coming, nicely embodies the concept of inheritance and the choices the individuals make about what they are given in order to decide their own destiny. " Seattle Times

This is an stunning book. The book is a complicated and poignant analysis of trips and the countless unexpected turns they might take—and somehow, Towles makes it all feel effortless. I wanted to read it again as soon as I completed it. " —Tana French, bestselling author of The Searcher

It's enthralling... Suspense, humor, philosophy, and a strong feeling of time and place are all there in The Lincoln Highway, which moves fast and steadily toward a satisfying climax. The Lincoln Highway, like the transcontinental route for which it is named, is long and full of interesting detours. It's worth the trip in the hands of a superb wordsmith like Towles. Welcome to the Lincoln Highway, a huge book of companionship and adventure where the miles fly by and the pages turn quickly. The story of these four lads unfolds, refolds, tears, and is put back together over the course of ten enthralling days. This multiperspective story is filled with unexpected detours and run-ins. " —Gregory Cowles, The New York Times Book Review

The tension that drives Towles' thrilling, amusing, [...] picaresque is the idea of American openness, of ever-fractalizing free will colliding with the fickle reality of fate... Towles seemed to be saying that stories can bring us back to ourselves if we are receptive to receiving their power... Anyone who travels the Lincoln Highway will have a great time. " Los Angeles Times

"[A] compelling work of historical fiction... transporting... a rollicking cross-country journey, rich with unique characters, vivid scenery, and tension that will have readers flying through the pages." TIME

Towles enthralls with his use of numerous points of view and shifts from humor to sorrow and back again." O Quarterly

Beautifully created, Towles ties the novel together with compassion and meticulous precision. Towles connects the yearnings of his characters with the social ills of the day, drawing a parallel between then and now. He accomplishes this through an elegant, nuanced narrative... The work deftly embraces our protagonist's paradoxes, bringing the reader forward with "a sensation of floating—like being taken down a large river on a hot summer day." Washington Post

[A] true joyride — latch onto this delicious tour de force and you'll be dragged straight through to the conclusion, powerless in the face of Towles' imaginative enthusiasm... The Lincoln Highway is well written and addictive to read; it's action-packed... This bountiful novel, crammed with intriguing characters [...] and full of digressions, magic tricks, sorrowful sagas, retributions, and the complex job of balancing accounts, has a lot to offer. —NPR.org

It's not only one of the most beautifully written books I've ever read; it's also a story about hope, friendship, and companionship at a time when we most need it. " With insightful and elegant words, Towles brilliantly conveys the inner reality of each character. All eight of them are literary powers to be reckoned with... Amor Towles is one of those authors who, in my opinion, will become our generation's Steinbeck, and [...] I believe The Lincoln Highway will become a classic that we will read for years to come." —Jenna Bush Hager, Read With Jenna book club

"[a] witty, intelligent, and brilliantly entertaining novel..." Towles fully embraces the episodic, exuberant narrative haywire found in myth or the Homeric epic...Towles argues that each [individual] is the major protagonist of a continuing journey that is both distinctive and universal, astonishingly buoyant, filled with light, humor, youth... Towles has ripped a minuscule strand of existence—ten errant days—and we see through his lens that this brief interstice teems with stories as magnificent as legends.
