THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
Finding language for our oddest feelings is unquestionably thrilling...
In this way, Koenig shines a light into the darkest recesses of human experience...

"It's a magical novel." —From the New York Times
The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows is a genuinely unique book in every sense of the term, elegantly defining feelings that we all feel but don't have the words to express—until now.

Have you ever wondered about the lives of the people you pass on the street, understanding that each individual is the protagonist in their own story, living life as colorful and complicated as your own? The sensation is known as "sonder." Perhaps you've seen a thunderstorm approach and felt a primitive desire for it to bring chaos into your life. This is referred to as "lachesism." Or perhaps you were gazing at old images and felt a twinge of nostalgia for a time you never lived through. That's what "anemoia" means.

If you've never heard of these terms, it's because they didn't exist until John Koenig set out to fill in the gaps in our emotional lingo. According to John Green, the bestselling author of The Fault in Our Stars, The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows "creates wonderful new words that we need but do not yet have." The definitions include whimsical etymologies drawn from languages around the world, interspersed with otherworldly collages and lyrical essays that explore forgotten corners of the human condition—from "astrophe," the desire to travel beyond the planet Earth, to "zenosyne," the feeling that time is speeding up.

The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows is for everyone who loves a change of perspective while contemplating the intangible emotions that make up our existence. This is the ideal present for creatives, word nerds, and human beings worldwide, with a stunning box and wonderful artwork throughout.
