Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones and Newbery Honor-winning novelist Renée Watson collaborate on The 1619 Project's lyrical picture book in verse, which examines the impacts of slavery and the history of black resistance in the United States.

In school, a young student is given family tree homework, but she can only trace her ancestors back three generations. Grandma gathers the entire family, and the student learns that their forefathers were kidnapped and taken to America by white slave traders 400 years ago, in 1619.

But they had a home, a territory, and a language before that. She discovers how the individuals who were thought to be born in the ocean managed to survive.

Born on the Water, with its compelling poems and gorgeous drawings by Nikkolas Smith, offers a way for readers of all ages to contemplate the origins of American identity.
