About the authors: J.K. Rowling

J.K. Rowling
Her name was just Joanne Rowling when her first Harry Potter novel was published, even though she now works under the pen name J.K. Rowling, which is pronounced like "rolling." Her publishers insisted that she use two initials instead of her full name, assuming that the intended audience of young boys would not want to read a book written by a woman. She picked K as the second initial of her pen name because she didn't have a middle name and was named after her paternal grandmother, Kathleen Ada Bulgen Rowling. "No one ever called me 'Joanne' when I was little unless they were upset," she says. When performing personal business after her marriage, she has gone by the name Joanne Murray. She testified at the Leveson Inquiry under the name Joanne Kathleen Rowling. Rowling stated in a 2012 interview that she no longer bothered if her name was mispronounced.

Rowling was born on July 31, 1965, in Yate, Gloucestershire, England, ten miles (16 kilometers) northeast of Bristol, to Peter James Rowling, a Rolls-Royce aviation engineer, and Anne Rowling (née Volant). Her mother, Anne, was half-Scottish and half-French. In 1964, her parents met on a train leaving King's Cross Station going to Arbroath. On March 14, 1965, they tied the knot. Her mother's maternal grandfather was born in Lamlash on the Isle of Arran. Her mother's paternal grandpa received the Croix de Guerre for extraordinary valor in defending the village of Courcelles-le-Comte during World War I.

When Rowling was 23 months old, her sister Dianne was born in their house. When Rowling was four years old, the family relocated to the adjacent community of Winterbourne. She went to St Michael's Primary School, founded by abolitionist William Wilberforce and education reformer Hannah More, where she went to school. Alfred Dunn, her headmaster at St Michael's, has been claimed as the model for Harry Potter's headmaster, Albus Dumbledore.

Rowling used to write fantasy novels as a child, which she would then read to her sister. She recalls the following: "I recall telling her a story about falling down a rabbit hole and being served strawberries by the rabbit family inside. Rabbit was the subject of the first narrative I ever wrote (when I was approximately five or six years old). When he contracted the measles, he was visited by his buddies, including Miss Bee, a huge bee. " Rowling moved to Church Cottage in the Gloucestershire village of Tutshill, near Chepstow, Wales, when she was nine years old. Rowling's great aunt, who "taught classics and approved of a passion for knowledge, even of a questionable kind," gave her a very old copy of Jessica Mitford's memoirs, Hons and Rebels, when she was a young teenager. Rowling's heroine became Rowling's heroine, and Rowling read all of her works as a result.

In an interview with The New Yorker, Rowling stated of her adolescent years, "I wasn't in a good mood. It's a terrible point in my life, in my opinion. " Her mother was ill, and she had a tense relationship with her father, so she grew up in a terrible environment (she is no longer on speaking terms with him). Her mother worked as a technician in the science department at Wyedean School and College, where she attended secondary school. Rowling reflected on her adolescence, saying, "Hermione Granger [a bookish, know-it-all Harry Potter character] is based on me in certain ways. She's a caricature of myself when I was eleven years old, which I'm not proud of. Rowling was "not remarkable," according to Steve Eddy, who taught her English when she first arrived, but she was "one of several females who were intelligent and fairly excellent at English." She claims that Sean Harris, her upper sixth grade best friend, had a turquoise Ford Anglia, which she claims inspired the one in her books.
