From the award-winning author of Chemistry comes a hilarious, touching, and piercingly incisive new novel about a fabulously complicated woman who can't be anybody but herself.

One of the most anticipated books of 2022—Esquire, BuzzFeed, Bustle, Town & Country, Ms. magazine, The Millions, Electric Lit, Lit Hub—Esquire

Joan works as an ICU doctor at a big New York hospital in her thirties. Joan is the daughter of Chinese parents who immigrated to the United States to give their children the American dream. She is devoted to her work, happily lonely and successful. She occasionally looks up and wonders where her true roots are: at the hospital, where her white coat makes her feel needed, or at home, where her family tries to mold her life according to their own cultural and social expectations.

Joan's parents returned to China after Joan and her brother, Fang, had established themselves in their careers, hoping to spend the rest of their lives there. When Joan's father dies unexpectedly and her mother returns to America to reconnect with her children, a chain of events sends Joan spiraling out of her comfort zone, just as her hospital, city, and the rest of the world are forced to confront a health crisis that no one could have predicted.

Joan Is Okay is deceptively spare but quietly powerful, laced with sharp humor, and it touches on topics that feel deeply resonant: being Chinese-American right now; working in medicine at a high-stakes time; finding one's voice within a dominant culture; being a woman in a male-dominated workplace, and remaining independent within a close-knit family. Above all, it's a portrait of one exceptional woman who will be with you for the rest of your life.
