Two people from different cultures are drawn together by fate and the freedom of music in Japanese-occupied Shanghai.

1940. Aiyi Shao is a young heiress who is the proprietor of a once-famous and glitzy Shanghai nightclub. Ernest Reismann is an impoverished Jewish immigrant from Germany, an outsider looking for a place to call home in a community leery of strangers. Until he meets Aiyi, he has almost completely lost hope. Her disregard of convention causes a stir when she employs Ernest to play piano at her club. Aiyi's club is once again the hottest destination in Shanghai thanks to his rapid celebrity. They soon discover they have more in common than a love of jazz, but their differences appear insurmountable, and Aiyi is betrothed to another guy.

As the conflict progresses, Aiyi and Ernest are torn apart, and the choice between love and survival becomes increasingly difficult. A series of events are put into action in the face of enormous odds that will transform both of their lives forever.

The Last Rose of Shanghai is a timeless, sweeping story of love and redemption set in everything from exhilarating jazz clubs to the destitute streets of a city under siege.

Reviews: The Last Rose of Shanghai

"The Last Rose of Shanghai is a captivating narrative of love, heartbreak, and redemption set in a novel that spans time, location, and culture. Japanese-occupied Shanghai's smoky nightclubs, jazz bars, luxury hotels, family compounds, and refugee settlements give an intriguing backdrop to the lives of individuals caught in the crossfires of conflict. Weina Dai Randel is a talented artist who creates well-drawn characters with depth, complexity, and compassion for the reader. "The Last Rose of Shanghai stands out in the WWII genre and within the historical fiction genre for its daring and uniqueness.  —Erika Robuck, bestselling author of The Invisible Woman

With a setting so vivid that you can almost hear the music in Aiyi Shao's nightclub, Weina Dai Randel brings intriguing WWII history to life for me and, I'm sure, countless other readers. The Last Rose of Shanghai will stick with you long after the narrative of a well-born entrepreneur and the German-Jewish refugee she loves ends.  —Sally Koslow, author of Another Side of Paradise

"  —Chanel Cleeton, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author

"The Last Rose of Shanghai" is a film about the last rose of Shanghai. As Jewish refugees flee Hitler's Berlin for faraway Shanghai, where they battle to survive among the uneasy coexistence of Chinese magnates and Japanese invaders, this film powerfully illustrates the collision of East and West. When sophisticated heiress Aiyi hires Jewish pianist Ernest to play jazz in her nightclub, she knows she's taking a chance, but she has no idea she'll be sacrificing her heart, her family, and everything she holds dear as forbidden love blooms and Japan's grip on her beloved hometown tightens. Weina Dai Randel's moving, sweeping love story presents a vivid portrayal of a little-known period of WWII history. "Don't miss it!"  —Kate Quinn, New York Times bestselling author of The Rose Code and The Huntress

Set in Japanese-occupied Shanghai, this is an amazing, page-turning story about an impossible love story between lovers from two cultures. Randel looks unflinchingly at the tragedies of wartime Shanghai, where refugees starve while the wealthy and privileged drink and dance, and where everyday fears of death only serve to stoke forbidden desires to a fiery conclusion.  —Janie Chang, bestselling author of Dragon Springs Road and The Library of Legends

The Last Rose of Shanghai is a stunning story of a Shanghai heiress's connection with a Jewish exile, set against the backdrop of a nightclub in China on the eve of WWII. Weina Dai Randel deftly illuminates a little-known historical moment through the eyes of two vividly depicted people whose unique and unexpected bond is one that readers will never forget. "  —Pam Jenoff, New York Times bestselling author of The Woman with the Blue Star

"Among WWII fiction, Weina Dai Randel's novel deserves a special place."  —Historical Novel Society

"Like Lisa See's Shanghai Girls or Paullina Simons' The Bronze Horseman, fans of grand, dramatic WWII epics with deep historical detail will be delighted."  Booklist
