"There are miniature sparkling explosions on every page." It's almost claustrophobic—in the best way—like Room, where parenthood is both your prison and your redemption. " —Lisa Taddeo, author of Three Women and Animals, a #1 New York Times bestselling novel.

This vivid, compassionate, and fearless depiction of addiction, rehabilitation, and motherhood, as searing and intense as Shuggie Bain, marks the American debut of a rising international literary star.

Sonya used to be a theatrical performer. She used to go to glitzy parties, date attractive men, and drive fast vehicles. However, the stage lights that Sonya cherished dimmed for good somewhere along the line. Darkness replaced them, with blackouts, empty cabinets, and hazy evenings she can't recall.

Sonya's kid, Tommy, saves her from entirely losing herself. Her undying love for Tommy, however, is at odds with her undying love for the bottle. Her fear of losing her child is amplified by her addiction, and every maternal blunder motivates her to drink. Tommy's life is in her trembling hands.

Tommy's life is in her trembling hands.
Sonya is eventually forced to make a decision. If you don't stop drinking, you'll lose Tommy for good.

Bright Burning Things is an emotional powerhouse, a heartbreaking, subtle, and ultimately hopeful portrayal of an addict's path to recovery and atonement.

About the authors: Lisa Harding

Lisa Harding
Lisa Harding, an Irish actor, playwright, novelist, and screenwriter, chose to transform her life when she enrolled as a mature student in Trinity College Dublin's MPhil in creative writing program. She earned her bachelor's degree in 2014 after a rocky career as an actor. With a sigh of relief, she can now state that she is no longer waiting for her agency to call with that elusive audition. She is no longer waiting for others to make innovative decisions for her. She can now produce material and develop her trade on a daily basis as a writer.

Project Theatre Dublin, Battersea Arts Centre, and Theatre 503 in London have all hosted theatre productions. The Winter Papers, Bath Short Story Anthology, and the Dublin Review have all published short pieces.

Harvesting, Lisa's debut novel, earned the Kate O'Brien prize and was nominated for best newcomer at the Irish Book Awards 2017. It was also shortlisted for the Kerry Group Prize 2018. Gallimard Press has translated it into French. The director of the Derry Girls is presently working on a movie adaptation. Her second critically lauded novel, Bright Burning Things, is published by Bloomsbury UK and Australia, Harper Via in the US, with French and Swedish translations due in 2022. It's also been optioned for a cinematic adaptation. She is now working on her third novel, Truth Games, which is the working title.

Lisa feels that starting to write and finding your voice is never too late. She enjoys teaching creative writing in Ireland and considers herself fortunate to have found her real passion later in life.

Her agent is Clare Alexander of Aitken Alexander in London.

Reviews: Bright Burning Things

In Irish writer Harding's searing U.S. debut, "a former London stage actress finds her life in Dublin destroyed by disappointment and drinking." Sonya's 12-step program is masterfully captured by Harding, with her time in rehab emotionally exacerbated by Sonya's absence from Tommy and her dread of not being reunited with him. This unvarnished depiction of a wounded, tender person brings readers to the depths of the human spirit. "   -- Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"[A] pulsating heart-wrencher... The slow-burning consequence of long-repressed sadness is depicted in a disturbing yet compassionate way."  -- Daily Mail (UK)

"[A] heartfelt account of a mother's battle with addiction... "As a depiction of feminine ruin, Bright Burning Things joins Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine and Shuggie Bain. "  -- The Times (UK)

Bright Burning Things is a powerful film, both humanistic and emotionally real. Both works [Shuggie Bain and Bright Burning Things] are about addiction and the suffering that addicts' families face... Bright, burning things, on the other hand, bring hope to both Sonya and the readers. "  -- Boston Globe

Lisa Harding is a great storyteller as well as a vivid and creative stylist. This is a fantastic book. "  -- Kevin Barry, author of Night Boat to Tangier

The author describes "a tumultuous voyage that culminates in a climactic scene that blends hope, horror, and beauty," as he says.  -- The Guardian

This is stunning. While the subject matter is near and dear to my heart, I would have enjoyed it even if I had no prior knowledge of addiction. It grabs your attention right away. Sonya's emotional introspection is enthralling and engaging. "  -- Marian Keyes
