The entwined fortunes of a young girl sold to a courtesan school and the destitute son of a hunter are explored in this epic saga of love, war, and redemption set against the backdrop of the Korean independence movement.

In 1917, a poor local hunter on the verge of hunger saves a young Japanese officer from an attacking tiger deep in the cold mountains of occupied Korea. Their fates are linked in an instant, and a narrative that spans half a century begins with this encounter.

In the aftermath, a little girl named Jade is sold to Miss Silver's courtesan school by her family, an act of desperation that will cement her place at the bottom of society. They build a great bond when she befriends an orphan child named JungHo, who scrapes by begging on the streets of Seoul. JungHo gets swept up in the revolutionary war for freedom as they grow older, while Jade blossoms into a sought-after performer with the new romantic prospect of noble birth. Jade will soon have to decide whether she is willing to risk everything for the one who would do the same for her.

Juhea Kim's unique characters construct their destinies as they wager their nation's, from the perfumed chambers of a courtesan school in Pyongyang to the glossy cafes of a modernizing Seoul and the frigid forests of Manchuria, where wars rage. Animals of a Little Land is an immersive and elegant story about a world where friends become enemies, adversaries become saviors, heroes are persecuted, and beasts take many forms.
