Dr. Kay Scarpetta, the chief medical examiner, is on the hunt for the people responsible for two vastly different and terrifying murders in this relaunch of the gripping, landmark thriller series.

Kay Scarpetta, a forensic pathologist, has returned to Virginia as the chief medical examiner, the state where she began her illustrious career. She's returned to town as the new girl after a long absence, and she's inherited not just an overbearing secretary, but also a history of neglect and suspected corruption.

In a post-pandemic world devastated by civil and political instability, she and her husband Benton Wesley, now a forensic psychologist with the US Secret Service, have relocated to Old Town Alexandria, where she is headquartered five miles from the Pentagon. Scarpetta is called to a site near train tracks where a woman's body has been shockingly displayed, her throat sliced down to the spine, and the trail travels unnervingly close to her own historic neighborhood as she begins to follow it.

At the same moment, a disaster occurs in a top-secret laboratory in space, putting the lives of at least two scientists on board in jeopardy. Scarpetta is summoned to the White House and tasked with figuring out exactly what happened after being appointed to the highly classified Doomsday Commission, which specializes in important national security matters. But, even as she works remotely on the first possible crime scene in space, a suspected serial killer kills again, this time extremely close to home.

About the Author

Patricia Cornwell

While working as a computer analyst at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond, Virginia, Patricia Cornwell sold her first novel, Postmortem, in 1990. The first true forensic thriller was Postmortem. It paved the way for a flood of forensic-themed entertainment in cinema, television, and literature.

The Postmortem went on to win the Edgar, Creasey, Anthony, and Macavity awards, as well as the Prix du Roman d'Aventure in France, making it the first novel to win all of these honors in the same year. Cornwell's books have been translated into 36 languages and sold in more than 120 countries. She has twenty-nine New York Times best-sellers to her credit.

The main characters in Patricia's books are medical examiner Kay Scarpetta, her tech-savvy niece Lucy, and colleague investigator Pete Marino. These characters have become an international phenomenon, earning Cornwell the Sherlock Award for best detective created by an American author, the Gold Dagger Award, the RBA Thriller Award, and the Medal of Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters for her contributions to literary and artistic development throughout their 25-year run.

Kay Scarpetta's rights were purchased by Fox in 2000. To develop the film and find a home for Scarpetta on the big screen, he worked with producer Liz Friedman, Marvel's Jessica Jones, and fellow Marvel EP and Twilight Saga scribe Melissa Rosenberg.

She started working at the Charlotte Observer after graduating from Davidson College with a degree in English in 1979.

Cornwell's series of pieces on prostitution and criminality in downtown Charlotte drew a lot of attention and appreciation. Cornwell left the Charlotte Observer for a position at the Virginia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, a position she would eventually bestow upon the fictional Kay Scarpetta.

Patricia spends her time researching cutting-edge forensic technologies to use in her job when she's not writing from her Boston home. Her interests are not limited to literature. Patricia was a co-founder of the Harvard University Art Museums' Conservation Scientist Chair. She is a forensic consultant on CNN and a member of the National Council of Harvard-affiliated McLean Hospital, where she promotes mental research. She's contributed to the Cornell Animal Hospital's intensive care unit, the scientific research of a Confederate submarine, the archaeological excavation of Jamestown, and several law enforcement organizations. Patricia is also committed to supporting literacy and scholarship programs. "Start writing," she advises wannabe novelists. And don't get discouraged if you get a negative response. "
