The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story is a dramatic enlargement of a remarkable work of journalism that gives a profoundly revealing perspective on American history and present.

A ship arrived in the British colony of Virginia in late August 1619 with a load of twenty to thirty enslaved people from Africa. Their presence ushered in a cruel and unprecedented system of chattel slavery in America, which would persist for the next 250 years. This is sometimes referred to as the country's original sin, but it is so much more: it is the source of so much that now defines the US.

The New York Times Magazine's award-winning "1619 Project" reframed our knowledge of American history by placing slavery and its enduring legacy at the center of our national narrative, and The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story builds on that. This new collection builds on the original 1619 Project by combining eighteen articles on the legacy of slavery in modern-day America with thirty-six poems and short stories that depict crucial periods of oppression, struggle, and resistance. The pieces demonstrate how the 1619 legacy pervades every aspect of modern American life, from politics, music, nutrition, traffic, and citizenship to capitalism, religion, and our democratic system itself. This legacy can be evident in the way we tell tales, teach our children, and remember things. Together, the book's contents provide a new origin story for the United States, one that explains not only the continuance of anti-black racism and inequality in American life today, but also the country's roots.

The book also includes a significant expansion of Nikole Hannah-Jones' Pulitzer Prize–winning lead essay on how Black Americans' struggles have expanded democracy for all Americans, as well as two new pieces by Hannah-Jones, one of which makes a powerful case for reparative solutions to this legacy of injustice.

This is a book that speaks directly to our current situation, contextualizing the racial and caste systems in which we live. It unveils long-hidden realities about our country's founding and construction, as well as how slavery's legacy did not cease with freedom and continues to shape modern American life.

Reviews: The 1619 Project

"On every page, readers will discover something new and redefining as Hannah-Jones and seventeen other vital thinkers and clarion writers bring to light long-hidden incidents and individuals, causes and effects... each of whom sharpens our understanding of the dire influence of anti-Black racism on everything... and how Black Americans fighting for equality decade after decade have preserved our democracy." The revelations are both terrifying and liberating. This creative, painstakingly constructed, profound, and bedrock-shifting statement belongs in every library and on every reading list.Booklist (starred review)

"The 1619 Project is a remarkable work for any lover of American history or letters, casting a wide, introspective glance across what many have accurately labeled the country's founding sin... The book's sheer scope is both refreshing and illuminating, forcing every reader to confront America's past, present, and future. "BookPage (starred review)

Pulitzer Prize winner Hannah-Jones and an extraordinary ensemble of historians, journalists, poets, novelists, and cultural critics provide a sweeping examination of African slavery's "unparalleled impact" on American civilization. Claudia Rankine, Terry McMillan, Darryl Pinckney, and others bring historical events to life in stories and poems. The outcome is a jarring and necessary rethinking of American history. "Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"It's a force to be reckoned with..." Based on the groundbreaking 1619 Project, this book adds nuance and fresh contributions from poets like Tracy K. Smith, writers like Kiese Laymon, and historians like Anthea Butler to the original work. This piece challenges readers to think about who has the power to shape communal memory. This essential book, like the magazine edition of the 1619 Project, distinguishes itself by reframing readers' perspectives on American history, past and present. "Library Journal (starred review)

Hannah-Jones and colleagues assess a country still dealing with the aftereffects of slavery, an imperfect Reconstruction, and the legacy of Jim Crow legislation, and propose legal measures to disenfranchise Black voters. This book will provide a full education to those readers who are open to new and surprising views of history. "A much-needed book that establishes a firm foothold in the raging debate over America's past and present."Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

"[A] game-changing compendium... These bold and provocative works, by diverse visionaries ranging from Barry Jenkins to Jesmyn Ward, expand on The 1619 Project's current scholarship, examining how the nation's initial sin continues to impact everything from music to food to democracy. This compilation is a fantastic addition to the critical truth-telling project that has been happening for a long time. "Esquire, Best Books of Fall 2021
