The New York Times bestseller number one

“This book is required reading for everyone interested in learning about and treating traumatic stress, as well as the magnitude of its societal impact.” Director of the Centre for Traumatic Stress Studies, Alexander McFarlane

In this New York Times bestseller, a pioneering researcher alters our understanding of trauma and presents a revolutionary new paradigm for recovery.

Trauma is an unavoidable part of life. One in every five Americans has been abused; one in every four grew up with alcoholics, and one in every three couples has engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world's leading trauma doctors, has worked with survivors for over three decades. He leverages recent scientific advancements in The Body Keeps the Score to explain how trauma reshapes both the body and the brain, jeopardizing sufferers' capabilities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust. He investigates cutting-edge treatments that activate the brain's innate neuroplasticity, ranging from neurofeedback and meditation to sports, theatre, and yoga. About the Author

Bessel van der Kolk

Bessel van der Kolk, MD, has spent his career researching how children and adults adapt to traumatic experiences and has used new insights from neuroscience and attachment research to develop and test a variety of traumatic stress treatments for children and adults.

He founded one of the first clinical/research centers in the United States dedicated to the study and treatment of traumatic stress in civilian populations in 1984, which has trained a large number of researchers and clinicians specializing in the study and treatment of traumatic stress, and which has been continuously funded to research the impact of traumatic stress and effective treatment interventions. He conducted the first studies on the impact of SSRIs on PTSD, was a member of the first neuroimaging team to examine how trauma alters brain functions and was the first to relate BPD and willful self-injury to early childhood trauma and neglect.
