Sally Rooney, the bestselling author of Normal People and Conversations with Friends, has written a new novel called Beautiful World, Where Are You?

Alice, a novelist, meets Felix, a warehouse worker, and invites him to join her on a trip to Rome. Eileen, her best friend in Dublin, is dealing with a breakup and reverts to flirting with Simon, a man she has known since childhood. Even though Alice, Felix, Eileen, and Simon are all in their early twenties, life is catching up with them. They lust after each other, deceive each other, unite, and then separate. They have sex, they are concerned about sex, they are concerned about their friendships, and they are concerned about the world they live in. Is it possible that they're standing in the last bright chamber before the darkness, witnessing something? Will they be able to believe in the existence of a lovely world?

Reviews: Beautiful World, Where Are You

“Rather than seizing onto difficulties and digging through them until every last nuance has been upturned and all the trauma and misery has been exhausted, Rooney brings her readers and characters through them in realistic depictions of the way time and life don't wait for individuals to recover...” It's never too late for those who haven't yet joined the Sally Rooney bandwagon.”―Oriana Christ, Zzvya

“As much as she despises the term, Rooney's latest book may just solidify her position as a key millennial voice. "―Harper’s Bazaar (Most Anticipated)

“Quick and to-the-point reflections on the follies of youth, sex, and friendships.”―The Millions' Adam Price (Most Anticipated)

“With her characteristic honesty and wit, Rooney captivates readers with both these meta-conversations and the acts of her characters' lives: their captivating, intimate, and momentous grappling with themselves, one another, and beauty, sex, and friendship. Rooney's first book since Normal People, which was turned into a popular and award-winning Hulu series, is generating a lot of buzzes.”―Booklist (Starred)

"A cool, engrossing story... Even though she recounts Alice and Eileen's most private moments, Rooney maintains a distance from her characters' inner lives, establishing a sense of solitude. It's a bold departure from her usual style, and it just adds to the impact of the illuminations when they appear. Rooney, as always, challenges and inspires. "―Publishers Weekly (Starred)

“In many ways, this novel, which is both a work of philosophy and a romantic tragicomedy about how people love and injure one another, is exactly the type of book one would expect Rooney to write in the current political climate. But the fact that the novel is so Rooney doesn't detract from its immense impact... “A novel with a lot of page-turning emotional drama and a lot of intelligence.”―Kirkus (Starred)

“Like a drunken sailor, I discard books, and in a different mood, I may have flung Rooney overboard. But suddenly, on page 40, there it was: a statement so exquisitely cruel that it halved my wonderful summer day. Is there anything else where that came from? I just needed to know... Gentle, passionate, and emotional... The plot is quite Austenian: “A group of people get mutually enlightened about their true nature and each other.”―Molly Young, Vulture

“Any gleam of [Rooney's] thinking refracted through a character would be welcome... When you think about how civilization is fading and the Earth is burning, it becomes evident that there are some uncommon pleasures, and horniness is one of them. If Rooney didn't perceive intrinsic worth in pleasure, in delighting the senses during our one spin on the globe, she wouldn't write so carefully about sex.”―Blythe Robertson, Bustle

“After Normal People and Conversations with Friends, [Sally Rooney's] third consecutive hit, an intimate and piercingly brilliant story about sex and friendship... Rooney is a master at finding significant meaning in the mundane, ratcheting up the tension and raising the stakes in even the tiniest of encounters. To find out if these four young people can figure out how and why to live, the pages turn as quickly as any thriller.”―Barbara VanDenburgh, USA Today

“[Sally Rooney's] works are fundamentally enjoyable to read... Beautiful World, Where Are You includes enough innovation—stylistic playfulness, a new, more cerebral style, a shift in perspective—to signify that she is attempting new things.”―Katie Roiphe, The Wall Street Journal

“Extremely well-written longing,” says the author. Three books in, and Rooney is still doing what he does best: entangling us in the jet-fueled fire between good-looking (and supernaturally articulate) Irish youngsters... Each sentence is built up like a brushstroke: on its own, any given line may appear uninteresting. We get complete sequences of otherwise mundane parties and bus rides, with glances cast and bodies changed, all depicted in a storybook-like style when put together.”―Delia Cai, Vanity Fair

"This is [Sally Rooney's] most obviously personal work to date... As someone approaching 30, Beautiful World spoke to me in a way that Rooney's earlier works did not. However, being on the verge of your thirties is far from a requirement for reading the novel... There's a weight to Alice and Eileen's stories, and it's the same weight and urgency that every one of us has been dealing with for the past 18 months."―Isabel Jones, InStyle

Rooney's full range of stories... The Irishness of the novel is like its professional jealousies or sexual tensions: bottled up for almost too long, then released in a flash... The events in Rooney's work take place in a specific location. When you give that place a name, her study of relationships becomes even more rewarding. Ireland is its name, and Sally Rooney is Irish."―Sean O’Neill, Gawker

“At times delightfully filthy and compulsively readable... Though being caught up in Rooney's web of friendship-courtship entanglements feels delightfully pleasurable, the pining looks, wounded squabbles, and even the filthy, sensual sequences aren't the reasons to read Beautiful World... Instead, it's what Rooney achieves with the other chapters, which consist of probing letters between Alice and Eileen, that seems so innovative and exciting.”―Alexis Burling, San Francisco Chronicle

“Reading the Rooney corpus in order gives the impression of watching the characters grow up and mature into a life of complex interpersonal relationships. Rooney's unique gift is to put readers at eye level with her characters and plot, drawing them into the world of her novel as if they were a participant in it... With her typically plain lines, she draws the reader in and establishes an intimacy similar to peeking over the characters' shoulders.”―Kyung Mi Lee, The Boston Globe

“Insightful, passionate, and ultimately reassuring...” It's fun to read about intelligent women courting each other's affection and admiration... She uses whatever material she's given and builds meaning out of it, just like any genuine artist... Maybe Rooney realizes that the narrow scale of her writing, the intimate, focused, loving attention she affords her characters, is what allows her works to imprison worries of vast historical scope within their confines.”―Hermione Hoby, 4Columns

Rooney's most lively and greatest work is Beautiful World, Where Are You... Despite approaching calamity, Rooney allows her characters, herself, and the reader to experience the entire gamut of often-embarrassing feelings that come with loving and appreciating other people, knowing that chaos, hope, and foolishness all exist, messy, together.”―Sophia June, Nylon

“This is Rooney's best writing to date... These pages have a sympathetic honesty and truthfulness, as well as a calm brilliance.”―Diana Evans, Financial Times

“This is a book that insists on the power of enduring relationships, as well as their difficulty... Beautiful World, Where Are You has the same pleasures as Rooney's previous novels, with the added pleasure of her voice as an essayist in the discursive emails that Alice and Eileen exchange... ―Molly Fischer, The Cut

"All while reminding us of her distinctive style's disarming intimacies, Rooney hammers out the flaws and promises of contemporary novels and contemporary life... Rooney is emerging into her full potential as an artist, eager to argue the validity and uniqueness of her methods... The nuances of Rooney's lightning-rod style, such as her deep well of sympathy for her characters and her precise economy of words, are combined with a rising maturity in "Beautiful World."―Adrienne Westenfeld, Esquire

Beautiful World, Where Are You? is still quite dialectical and Marxist, and it is more concerned with political debates than with ordinary people or conversations with friends...It's also a love letter to the novel as a kind of art, and, by extension, to how people interact with one another... "Beautiful World, Where Are You? "is a love letter to us all, to all the ways we love."―Constance Grady, Vox

“It's a credit to Rooney's inquisitive, cerebral abilities as a writer that she not only entices her readers to tolerate extended stretches of such ruminations but also entertains them. With our end-of-the-world concerns, we believe we're in good company... Rooney ironically looks back to one of the oldest forms of the book, the epistolary or letter form, to tell her story in this grandiose novel of sentiment and ideas, which is so up to date in its global issues... Rooney's novel is open-ended, as is all great fiction.”―Maureen Corrigan, NPR’s Fresh Air

“[Rooney's] sex writing is crisp and clear. It's a narrative style I connect with Andrew Haigh and Joanna Hogg's films, two great visual poets of social hesitation and dread. Rooney's dialogue is almost always spot-on... Rooney's best novel to date is Beautiful World, Where Are You. “It's funny and insightful, full of sex and love, and people trying to connect.”―The New York Times Book Review's Brandon Taylor
